A few days ago as I was planning my first post in a ridiculously long two weeks, it was as sweltering as this town ever gets. Oh that typical, a-typical Spring spike in the temp! So of course, I was thinking ice cream. Then, in comes the fog, the cool breeze, the grey clouds, a little drizzle and what am I thinking? Well, ice cream. Because when it comes to ice cream, there is no temperature too cold or too wet.
And when it comes to getting a scoop in West Portal (or anywhere West of Twin Peaks for that matter), nothing beats walking beneath that red and white awning of Shaw’s to pick your flavor if the day. Featuring local favorite Mitchell’s ice cream, Shaw’s is as iconic in West Portal as our Empire Theater. With photos on the wall to prove it, the place has been around since the 30s since the tunnel was created.
Like many mom and pop shops, Shaw’s hasn’t been in the same family since its inception in 1931 by Douglass Shaw, but the current owners have kept it true to its original feel. Kitschy Pez dispensers and candy themed paraphernalia line the shelves and walls. Brightly colored licorice mixes, jelly beans, chocolate and homemade fudge create the ultimate crave-fest, accompanied with the aroma of freshly spun cotton candy. Want to surprise someone with a little sugary love? They’ll deliver these tasty treats to your sweet-toothed sweetie anywhere in SF or the world for a flat fee.
Ultimately though, the line of customers ends up at the ice cream counter til 8 on weekdays and 10pm on weekends. With an array of options from a super tiny single scoop to a colossal fudge filled sundae and everything in between, the only thing they’re missing is seating. If that’s a deal breaker for you, score a spot on the bench outside and you’re golden. As for me, I’ll be the one standing outside with a cone in one hand and umbrella in the other. Ah the hardships I endure.
